Photosetting Font Disc
VariTyper Headliner machine font disc. There were many discs available for the Headliner. Each disc had just one font, larger fonts had just the upper case, or lower case per disc. I have a few to sell, you can ask for a particular font, but it’s likely you’ll just have to accept what I can supply. Diameter 340mm. They are well used, some in tidier condition than others. Safe packaging and shipping cost should be checked with me at purchase time.
The font discs were loaded onto the headliner machine which photographed, developed and printed on to a photographic strip which would have been cut and pasted into a page of artwork. This layout would then be photographed and developed onto film used to expose on an offset printing plate. There were quite a few steps in preparing the design for plates back then!
These could make great clock faces, they could be painted in colours on the reverse to show as black text on a coloured background. The possibilities are endless if you have a runaway imagination!
